Results of the Phoenix 500 After 500 miles, Busch holds off Waltrip for the win! Kurt Busch pulls off the win after leading 219 laps, a career high, of the Phoenix 500. This was his first win of the 2005 season. This race had a total of 16 lead changes among 9 drivers but Busch took the lead at lap 269 and would stay there until the checkered flag. Despite Michael Waltrip’s hard efforts to move towards the front, he just couldn ’t pull it off. He hit the wall two time in his efforts to overtake Busch but Busch was able to keep his lead. Kyle Busch was the Rookie of this race as he was able to run in the front pack with his Hendrick Motorsports teammate Brian Vicerks. He ended the race in eights place.
